1930's Catalog Page from the A.C. Becken Company

Vintage NuTone Door Chime Advertisements

Most people have forgotten that NuTone started as a Door Chime Company.  Beginning in the 1930's, Door Chimes were a very popular upgrade to many homes.  NuTone offered well engineered and stylish designs that would suit the homes of that period.

Door Chimes we special products, each model was given a name that helped express its style or sound.  Each time the Chime was rung it was meant to add a pleasant moment to the daily routine of the household.

NuTone produced many fine advertisements in magazines, newspapers and their Chimes were featured items in wholesale and mail order catalogs.

This catalog page is likely from the A.C. Becken Company of Chicago, Illionis and dates from the late 1930's.  A.C. Becken was a Jobber of watches, clocks, watch bands, jewelry boxes and probably NuTone Electric Door Chimes.  As noted on the page:

"The clanging door bell is a nerve-wracking as the shrill screech of a parrot.  But NuTone Door Chime is as welcome as the melody of the birds in the spring"

These early chimes have simple model numbers like "593C1" or "593C3 Model D" so the practice of giving names to each chime had not started yet.  It's interesting that all of the chimes will operate on 110 volts AC power or dry-cell batteries and each of them include a "special transformer".

The color selections are traditional with finished like Ivory and Bronze and then there are the bold colors like Red, Green and Black.  The chime tubes were available in either Brass or Chromium.

The most expensive chime on the page is the model "593C4 Model C" with a price of $11.60.  It interesting to consider that the average household income in 1939 was $1368.00.  I wonder how many people in 1939 would spend nearly 1% of their household income on a door chime?

The most intrging chime on the page is not a chme at all, it's a "Dinner Chime" Model 593C9.

"Three tones including duplication of famous NBC chime tones."

" Can be furnished in rich bronze or stippled black"

The price of the Dinner Chime is $5.12.  It was explained to me that it was very common in formal households to use a Dinner Chime to announce the call to dinner and to call for the servants during a meal.

I actually own a vintage NuTone Dinner Chime and I will post pictures of it for everyone to see.

Dear Cindy & Christopher,
I´m specifically very interested in a 1939 Becken Book catalog.
Would you be so kind to inform me if you own a whole one?
If yes, I would be very interested in buying it or, if you do not want to sell it, in buying some copies of some specific pages.

Thank you very much for your time.
Kind regards,
Pedro.

Dear Chris:

Can I connect two Nutone electronic door chimes together (L-73 and L-70) in parallel using only one transformer (16 volt style model 105-N) or should I replace it to a more powerful transformer?

Each chime has connections 1 and 2 to the intercom. Should I connect both chimes to the Intercom or can I pick only one ?

Thank-you.

Hi Louis,

I'm not sure why you would want to have two separate and different door chimes in the same house or connected to the same Intercom System.

Since the LA73 is a 3 entry door chime and the LA70 is a 2 entry door chime, you can just choose one of the chimes and wire it with 2 push buttons.

Since whichever chime you choose will be connected the your 2561, you will hear it through the Intercom Speakers, so hearing the chime throughout the home should no be a problem.

If you use the LA73, I would use a 301N (or 301T) in place of the original 105T which is to low rated for this type of chime (in my opinion)

A 105N or (105T) is fine with the LA70, however if you use a 301T the plungers will strike with more force and the chime will be louder

Thanks
Chris

Dear Chris:

It is not LA73 nor LA70, it is actually the old L-73 from 1964 and LB-70 from the early seventies. The first one is a 2 note electronic built-in while the second one is an 8 note electronic surface-mounted.

I currently have the L-73 installed in the kitchen, working and properly connected to the 2561. I hear the chime throughout the home only when the music is playing (Radio-Intercom position). This is correct according to Nutone's 2561 User Guide. The problem is that some members of my family wish to listen to the door chime in their rooms without listening to music. I keep all the speakers on stand-by permanently. (Chime does not sound on stand-by or monitor functions of the speakers).

The L-73 installed on the kitchen's first floor does not sound loud enough to be listened clearly on the second floor. This is the reason why I'm planning to connect another door Chime, 8 note LB-70 (in parallel with the L-73) in the hallway, so the sound would be louder and I wouldn't need to turn off the music on the Master Station.

The house is old and big, made of thick brick and concrete walls, suitable for 2 door chimes connected to a single pushbutton. I wonder if this is possible using only one old Nutone 16 volt style 105-N transformer. Thank-you very much.

Hi Louis

I am familiar with both of the chimes you mentioned, mixing the 8 note with a 2 note may not be ideal since the 8 note needs a longer button press to move for its 'at rest' starting position. Usually the button press for a 2 note chime is quick.

You will need to move up to a 301T (16 volt 30 watt transformer) if you going to power 2 chimes. Otherwise the 8 note chime may stall mid-ring due to a voltage and current drop.

You will need to make sure you wire the 8 note chime so it draws power directly from the transformer and not from the 2 note chime.

Thanks
Chris

Dear Chris:

Very nice hint about using the 301T transformer to make the chime louder. Perhaps it won't be necessary to install 2 chimes after all. Can I use this 301T transformer with the 2 note L73 chime alone ? Will it be louder and safe ? Or Is it recommended only for 8 note chimes ?

Thank-you very much !

Hi Louis,

Yes, you can use a 301T with the L73 chime. I use 301T's with all 2 note chime to give them a stronger plunger strike. It is perfectly safe, how much louder it will be is difficult to say, but it's an easy upgrade and worth doing

Dear Chris:

Can I use benzine to clean the plunger holes of a Nutone door chime LB70 ?

Thanks indeed.

Hi Louis,

No. The recommended cleaner is standard liquid lighter fluid, the kind that you would put into a Zippo Lighter

Thanks
Chris
