NuTone SM428 main board stereo fader controls

There are dual fader controls for each of the different sound adjustments on the SM428.  These include:

Balance

Volume

Bass

Treble

These fader controls can be a source of problems with the SM428.  They are made mostly of plastic and they can be easily broken.  They are also no longer available to buy from NuTone.

There are 2 basic types of fader controls used in audio equipment, one type has a "linear taper" and the other has a "audio taper".  This has to the amount of sound adjustment that is made when the control is moved, in relationship to how much it is moved.

The SM428 used Audio Taper faders and each pair of faders (for each adjustment feature) is different from the others. This means that none of the faders are interchangeable - so don't break them!

The On/Off and Stereo/Mono switches are standard slide switches.

The "Signal Strength" Meter is attached to the circuit board on a flexible mount.
